Frida's iconic look continues to inspire artists around the world, and that includes me. Unlike most pieces where I am meticulous about each detail and strive to finish a painting according to my initial vision, in this one I allowed myself to play and explore what each color or movement would bring to the portrait without worrying about the final look. I started with acrylic in the background, the subject with pastels, and eventually ended some finishing touches with oil. It was a pleasure to work on it. I particularly like the juxtaposition of the black and white checkerboard sides compared the colorful and vivid painting, which I think gives the artwork a modern and contemporary look.
